The CFA is part of NFL Flag and offers programs for children ages 5-17. In the Spring season, we offer 5 divisions to include: Coed 5-6, Coed 7-9, Coed 10-12, Girls 7-17, and Boys 13-17. In the Fall season, we offer Girls 7-17 and Boys 13-17.
NFL Flag football is an exciting fast-moving team sport.
Basic Flag Football Rules:
The offense takes possession of the ball at its 5-yard line and has 3 plays to cross mid-field. Once a team crosses mid-field, they have 3 plays to score a touchdown. If the offense fails to score, the ball changes possession and the new offensive team starts its drive on its own 5-yard line.
Additional rules can be found in our
Bylaws.
Basic Information:
Unless specified, flag football will use NFL Flag guidelines and regulations.
Games - All CFA games are held at the Culpeper Sports Complex, usually on Saturdays. However, the CFA tries to ensure every team plays 8 games and depending on weather and the overall schedule there are times that games will be played on Weekdays and/or Sundays. Weekend game times can vary but should never start before 9am or end after 9pm. Weeknight games usually start and finish between 6pm and 9pm. Games are 40 minutes, with a running clock, and 2 twenty-minute halves; the clock only stops for timeouts. There is a 5–10 minute halftime.
Location: The CFA is fortunate to have use of the Culpeper Sports Complex, an amazing venue for youth sports. There are 3 football fields (7, 8, 9) that all have scoreboards and as of the 2022 Fall Season we also have LIGHTS.
Field: The field dimensions are 50 yards by 70 yards with two 10-yard end zones.
Practice: Practices are held in various locations. Often at the Complex or at many of the County schools. Once the player is drafted, the coaches will reach out and provide this information. Flag teams are permitted 2 practices per week for 2 hours each.
Equipment: Each player will be issued a jersey, shorts and flags. Cleats and mouth guards are not provided.
Dress Code: No necklaces, bracelets, earrings, long nails, durags or bandanas may be worn at practice or games.
Flags: All players must always keep flags visible. Flags cannot be tied to the belt and jerseys must be tucked in.
Draft: The CFA uses a draft to assign participants to teams. Players are re-drafted every season in full. There are several evaluation events prior to the season. While the evaluations events are NOT required, a participant that does not attend will be a "Hat Pick" in the draft. Siblings playing in the same division will be assigned to the same team.
Participation: Each player shall participate in at least 8 plays per half, except for a coach or parental disciplinary action. Play sheets are to be used to log the number of plays per player and will be turned in by each team at the end of the game to the Field Manager.
Player Conduct: If the field manager or official witnesses any act of intentional tackling, elbowing, cheap shots, blocking or any unsportsmanlike act, the game will be stopped, and the player will be ejected from the game. The decision is made at the referee's discretion and no appeals will be considered. Foul play will NOT be tolerated. Offensive or confrontational language is illegal, and the officials have the right to determine what is or is not offensive language. If it occurs, the referee will give one warning, if it continues the player or players will be ejected from the game.
